A Single Rose

Upon his graduation from university Robert Gulingé joined the staff of the Paris branch of the renowned Mayer Company, part of the financial conglomerate controlled by Raymond Mandalay. Robert soon won Mr. Mandalay's confidence and was transferred to the head office in New Orleans.

Ten years have passed and Robert is now a successful executive with yet greater promise for his future in the company.

Robert is strongly attracted to his new secretary, Hanna, because of her striking resemblance to his first love, Miléne. He presents a rose to Hanna as a symbol of his affection. However, Hanna is in love with Bernard Jones, the manager of the Magnolia Hotel and also the star of the Hotel's floor show.

Patricia, the owner of Magnolia Hotel, is unable to get the hotel operating profitably in spite of her best efforts. The Mayer company assumes the hotel's debts and takes over its management.

Hanna begs Robert to do whatever he can to help Bernard. Robert consults with Steve, one of his trusted colleagues and a good friend, but they can't come up with a workable plan. The key problem is that the Mayer executive responsible for the Magnolia Hotel operation is Walter Morgan, Robert's chief rival in the firm.

As a last resort Robert decides to produce a play starring Mr. Mandalay's granddaughter, Diana. He then plans to get engaged to Diana and use his new position of influence to save the Magnolia.

Diana falls madly in love with Robert and willingly helps her beloved with his plans. Robert is deeply moved by Diana's ardent love and is troubled by his own deception.

Robert's plans succeed and the Magnolia Hotel decides to keep Bernard as manager.

However, Robert cannot in good faith deceive Diana any longer and so resigns from the Mayer company. He books passage on a ship bound for Paris.

Bernard urges Hanna, "Robert loves you with all his heart and you are in love with him. Go to him now."

One foggy night on a wharf in the port of New Orleans a man stands deep in thought.

A woman approaches and says, "May I offer you a white rose? I am troubled that I have no one to take it."
