Origin of Stage Name: It was chosen by her father, the novelist Sakata Hiro, and his friend Shouno Junzou, based on the Kakinomoto-no Hitomaro's poem: み熊野の 浦の浜木綿 百重なす 心は思へど 直に逢はぬかも (I have dreamt of you as many times as many crinum flowers grow near Kumano bay, but ah! I do not have hope to meet you once more). Ooura literally means "great bay", and mizuki - "spreading trees".

Ooura Mizuki memorial site

  • She is considered to be one of the best dancers in the history of Takarazuka and the "Fred Astaire" of the revue. It is under her that the name "Dancing Flower Troupe" emerged. (Anju Mira continued this tradition.)
  • Before entering Takarazuka, she graduated from junior high school; it was a condition of her father after which she was allowed to take the exam.
  • After leaving Takarazuka, she had a successful career as a singer and tango dancer.
  • She wrote two books about her experiences in the Revue.
  • She died of lung cancer on November 14th, 2009 at a hospital in Tokyo. She was 53 years old. Her funeral was attented by her collegues, classmates and fans. She was planning to appear on stage in the early 2010.
  • On November 11th, 2013, Ooura's sister Naitou Keiko opened an one-year-long exhibition in memory of the famous Takarasienne. Admission to the exhibition was free. Address: 165-0035, Tokyo, Nakano ward, Shirasugi quarter, 1-11, Suginomiya, 1-3.
