Chinese Milk Vetch

They might be as tiny as milk vetch, but this is a tale of a people who live life to its fullest and build a five-story pagoda.

The capital has been laid waste by nearly ten years of war, and destroyed by fire as far as the eye could see, and brigands, plague, and drought have ruined the hearts of the people. On the outskirts of the capital is a temple called Manganji.

The temple, too, has been burnt and ruined, but some years before a traveling monk started sleeping on the road in front of the temple. For the sake of the homeless children, he built small houses, and grew beans and wheat with the children.

This head monk had one dream. For the sake of the weather-beaten Buddha, he wanted to build a five-storied pagoda.

In the spring, the Chinese milk vetch blooms. A man is attacked and robbed in front of the temple by five or six teenage hoodlums.

He is rescued by the head monk and Fumi, who were passing by. Actually, those thieves were former children who had lived in the small houses. The man, Shinroku, is an itinerant carpenter.

Seeing his change, the head monk wants to ask the man to build a five-storied pagoda. But with no funds and not knowing Shinroku's abilities, it could be a tough task ahead....
