Part 1 - Portraits of Love -

In 1755, a sixth daughter was born to the Jarjayes, a family whose head held the title of count. For generations, each head of the house of Jarjayes had served the French Royal Family as a royal guardsman. The general who had been wishing for a son and heir decides at last to bring up his youngest daughter as a boy and gives her a boy's name, Oscar, which means "God" and "spear" in Hebraic. André Grandier, a grandson of Oscar's wet nurse Marronglace, comes to the residence of the Jarjayes. The general allows the boy to live in his residence as he feels pity for him as he had lost his parents in childhood. André is Oscar's senior by one year and is raised as Oscar's playmate and her guard as well. Oscar and André grow up as if they are brothers in spite of their difference in birth.

The Bourbon Dynasty once glorious is showing signs of decline in the time of Louis XVI. The kingdom's financial difficulties are facing a critical situation. The weight of taxation bears ever heavier on the French common people who have been suffering under famines for several successive years. Oscar serves as captain in the royal guards defending the royal palace. Because the people are suffering so much, Oscar feels it unfair to spend an easy life just because she is a member of the privileged class. She applies for a transfer to the French Guards whose job is to protect the common people.

On the day when Oscar arrives at the French Guards' quarters, its wild members confront her. Squad leader Alain de Soissons hates nobles. He curses Oscar for being not only a noble but also a woman. He refuses to obey her and asks her to leave. Oscar cannot stand the disobedience of her guardsmen any longer and defies them to expel her by sword. Alain, the best swordsman of the French Guards, accepts her challenge. After a fierce fight, she defeats him.

Rosalie, who serves the Jarjayes as a housekeeper, adores Oscar from the bottom of her heart. One day, a journalist named Bernard calls on the Jarjayes residence. He tells Rosalie that it is dangerous for Oscar to serve in the French Guards when the country is in confusion, all the more so because she is a woman. Rosalie becomes more anxious for Oscar's safety. On the very night of that day, Oscar tells Rosalie that Bernard wants to marry Rosalie. Rosalie feels confused. Oscar who takes Rosalie for her younger sister is very pleased at the match and asks her if she accepts his proposal. Rosalie, who is very much fond of Oscar, wants to serve her as long as possible. With tears in her eyes, she realizes that it is impossible; makes up her mind and marries Bernard.

The guardsmen give their own rations to their families. They are poor and desperate in their efforts to help them. Oscar announces that the French Guards must protect the weak common people. Inspired by Oscar's ardent thoughts towards the country, the French Guards resolve to stand up with her for France.

The tension between the government and the common people continues to rise as the government demands the dissolution of the National Assembly while the common people refuse it. If the government decides to dissolve the assembly by force, the guardsmen led by Oscar would surely be mobilized to the forefront. André vows before General Jarjayes that he will protect Oscar at the risk of his life.

Part 2 -A Myth of Love-

Presently at a drills ground, Oscar is enjoying full confidence of her guardsmen. General Bouillet comes to the drills ground and commands Oscar to go to Paris in order to disperse by force the representatives of commoners now occupying the assembly hall. They are there in protest against the dissolution of the National Assembly. Oscar firmly refuses General Bouillet's order. She tells him that his order is wrong because the prime role of the French Guards is to protect the nation. General Bouillet finds her insulting and decides to arrest her. However, General Jarjayes intervenes between Bouillet and Oscar thus saving her from being arrested for insulting her superior.

General Jarjayes tells Oscar to marry Major Girodelle. Girodelle is the successor to Oscar as captain of the Royal Guards, and he has been attracted to Oscar for a long time. Hearing of Oscar's approaching marriage, André feels desperate. Since childhood, André has been in love only with Oscar. One evening, André in despair comes into Oscar's room with a bottle of wine containing poison. He would prefer to kill Oscar and then himself by poison rather than to see her marry another man. In the course of their conversation, Oscar thanks André saying, "Recently, I've come to realize that I am complete because I'm supported by you," and asks him to stay with her from then on. André becomes aware of the selfishness of his conceit and confesses his love for her that he has so far kept to himself. Oscar is quite astonished at his sudden confession and moved by the depth of his love for her. Oscar declines Girodelle's proposal thinking of André.

On the eve of mobilization in Paris, Rosalie comes to see Oscar with anxiety for Oscar's safety. Rosalie wants Oscar to keep herself away from danger, and so she desperately tries to stop her from going to Paris. Oscar thanks her for thinking of her and sees her off. Oscar realizes she is supported by many people and feels grateful. Shortly afterward, when André comes into her room, she tells him her heart. Oscar accepts the love of André who has not thought of anyone else but her in a long time. They are bound more closely.

On the Seine in the city of Paris, armed citizens stand in the face of the guardsmen. Then the citizens rage in anger with the news that the king's army has started shooting its citizens. General Bouillet commands Oscar to immediately attack the citizens. Oscar refuses the order to kill and decides to give up her title and join the commoners. Hearing Oscar's decision, the members of the French Guards follow her to fight against the king's forces. André worries about Oscar and tries to join her. However, a bullet shoots him dead. Upon seeing him shot dead, Oscar shouts in despair. Oscar keeps advancing at the head of the people in spite of her grief over André's death. Then, shortly after several bullets hit Oscar, a white flag rises over the Bastille. Oscar hears the people crying out in joy that the Bastille has fallen and calmly passes away smiling.
