Lived in A Dream
After days of most glorious joy and most depressing agony, Hikaru Genji was dying. The world lost light and was filled with darkness. To-no-Chujo, who was both his rival and his best friend all through his life, wished the return of the beautiful days full of glory. Then, the spirit with the power to control time, or "Time Spirit" appeared to project diverse daydreams as he wished.
Time reversed, and the glorious and lamentable tale of Hikaru Genji began. Hikaru Genji returned to Kyoto from Suma, where he retreated after his secret meeting with his political rival's princess came to light. Left alone in Akashi, Akashi-no-ue missed him profoundly. To the contrary, Murasaki-no-ue was filled with joy after waiting for Hikaru Genji for a long time. When he visited the emperor's palace, His Majesty Suzaku appointed him to look after His Imperial Highness Prince all his life. His Imperial Highness Prince was the illegitimate child born in the impermissible relationship between Fujitsubo, the wife of His Majesty Kiritsubo, and Hikaru Genji.
One year passed, and His Imperial Highness Prince celebrated his coming of age to become His Majesty Reizei. Hikaru Genji regained political power as Domestic Affairs Minister: the glorious days started. In Akashi, the Akashi monk sent Akashi-no-ue and Princess Chii to Genji in spite of his sorrow to be apart, wishing Princess Chii to become Her Majesty the Empress as the god of Sumiyoshi prophesied.
Time passed, and the Time Spirit revived the sad dreams in the early spring. To-no-Chujo's father Dajo Minister passed away and both Hikaru Genji and To-no-Chujo mourned in grief. Misfortunes afflicted Genji one after another. It was reported that Fujitsubo, whom Hikaru Genji continuously admired, had fallen into critical condition. In her deathbed, Fujitsubo saw illusions of Hikaru Genji when he was very young. It was only once that Fujitsubo committed the sinful secret meeting with him, but she, too, knew she loved him. Hikaru Genji visited her, and neither of them spoke a word of love. Fujitsubo passed away with the sin kept in her heart.
On one New Year's day, two pairs of father and son - Hikaru Genji and Yugiri, and To-no-Chujo and Kashiwagi - performed a dynamic and heroic dance. Hikaru Genji was preparing for further glory by means of the imperial marriage between Akashi's princess, brought up as an adopted daughter of Murasaki-no-ue, and His Imperial Highness Prince. In accordance with the special arrangement made by Murasaki-no-ue, Akashi-no-ue was provided with the opportunity to serve the princess in the palace, and was reunited with her daughter. Akashi-no-ue appreciated Murasaki-no-ue's consideration, and Murasaki-no-ue found Akashi-no-ue to be modest, graceful and beautiful, also.
Hikaru Genji was now 40 years old. He became His Majesty Jundajo Emperor. and his glory was at its peak. However, destiny unexpectedly turned out to be ironical. He married Her Imperial Highness Princess Onnasan-no-miya in accordance with the strong request by Suzaku-in. Murasaki-no-ue was so devastated that she lost her health, not being able to believe in Hikaru Genji's love which she was totally dependent upon. Meanwhile, the excessively immature Princess Onnasan-no-miya disillusioned Hikaru Genji. But Kashiwagi was attracted by her, and knew her one night. They could not stop their burning emotion and kept meeting each other again and again until Onnasan-no-miya conceived Kashiwagi's child. Hikaru Genji found out about their relationship and was furiously jealous. It was then he remembered his sinful relationship with Fujitsubo. It was a shock to him to realize that his father may have known about it but had kept quiet.
Hikaru Genji was informed that Murasaki-no-ue had fallen into critical condition. She revived once as a result of his desperate prayers. On one fine spring day, she held a Buddhist service knowing her time of death. She danced the Ryo-oh dance calmly but passionately, then breathed her last breath in the arms of Hikaru Genji. He was shattered by grief.
The Time Spirit reappeared, and Hikaru Genji noticed it for the first time. He realized at last that Murasaki-no-ue was what he valued the most, whatever power and title he might have. And he left the world for the heavens where Murasaki-no-ue waited for him.
