In Quest of the Blue Bird

On the top floor of a skyscraper in New York, a party is being held to announce the engagement of actress Brenda Burton to Jake MacNaughton, the son and heir of the president of El Grande, the number one underwear manufacturer in the U.S.A. While Jake is about to marry Brenda for publicity objectives for the company ; she who acts as El Grande's image character is to wed him because of his fortune and also for securing her career as an actress. In fact, Jake's father Anthony and Brenda's manager Dennis opposed the marriage and advised them to reconsider. Brenda and Jake only turned a deaf ear to their advice.

Jake's younger brother Vincent MacNaughton arrives at the party. They are not of the same blood but brothers by marriage. Vincent had at one time worked with Jake at El Grande. As he could no longer put up with Jake's inhumane way of management, he quit the company and started working as an Alpine rescuer. Jake takes advantage of Vincent's coming home to attend the party by trying to persuade him to again work for the company. Anthony also wishes Vincent to join Jake again in order to further expand the company. Anthony takes this occasion to tell his sons that he will remarry after handing over the reins of the company to Jake. Jake deplores Anthony's remarriage and becomes hard on him. At the sight of Jake treating Anthony harshly, Vincent recalls the day when they lost their mother Maria.

A few days after the betrothal party, Jake visits a clandestine factory in a southeast asian country. Vincent joins him in seeing this factory which is counterfeiting El Grande's products. Jake finds out that Vincent's rescue squad is about to disband due to financial difficulties. He offers financial aid to Vincent for his squad on condition that Vincent once again works for El Grande. At first Vincent reluctantly accepts for the sake of the squad. Shortly afterward, he changes his mind and promises Jake that he would work hard once he starts working. Jake rejoices at the determination of his younger brother and feels they are gradually restoring their brotherhood. It turns out that a poor local family is making the imitations of El Grande's products. Jake severely denounces the family for faking his products whereas Vincent asks him to forgive the family this once. Then, all of a sudden, they hear a bird singing. Jake looks up and sees the blue bird. He fancies that the bird is saying, "Please forgive them." He wonders if it is the blue bird that brings about happiness. Seized with a strange feeling, Jake abruptly forgives the family. As he is about to leave, a mysterious old man shows up. The old man offers to do some "ornithomancy (divination by bird)" for Jake in acknowledgement of his having forgiven the family. According to the old man, the bird which Jake chooses will tell the name of his fate. Jake thinks it impossible that a bird can tell the name of his fate, believing in modern science rather than divination. However, as soon as he sees the blue bird, he chooses it despite himself. The blue bird tells him, "Your fate is Gina Coulter." He has never heard that name before and with deep surprise he wonders who she is. The name continues to bother him although he judges the divination absurd. He heads for the airport with a memo on which the name of Gina Coulter is written.

A few days after their arrival home, Milborne and other employees of El Grande are busy preparing for the presentation of some new products. Among the telegrams congratulating their presentation of new products, Jake finds a telegram from Paris sent by a person named Gina Coulter. This second coincidence gives him an impulse to see the woman and decides to go to Paris in a hurry. Vincent, Brenda, Dennis and Jake's secretary Susan join him to find Gina.
