Flowers Strewn on the Western Sea

A musical romance based on the invigorating life of Taira no Sukemori.

(Official English synopsis taken from the programme, with little edition)

In the middle of the Twelfth Century there was a radical change in Japan's political system. The Samurai class of warriors gained political control over the Aristocrats.

Among the Samurai, the Heike Clan became the ruling power and they reached the heights of prosperity so that it was said, "There's no people other than the Heike".

Sukemori was the grandson of the Heike leader, Taira-no-Kiyomori. Sukemori was a broad-minded and generous Samurai.

One summer he met Sakon on the banks of the river Kamo in Kyoto. Sakon was a member of the Imperial court. The two fell deeply in love.

After the deaths of Sukemori's father, Shigemori, and his grandfather, Kiyomori, the Heike clan's vitality seemed to be in decline. Their rivals, the Genji Clan, gathered Samurai clans from the East in preparation to attack Kyoto and overthrow the Heike.

Munemori, who became the leader of the Heike, following Kiyomori's death, thought it best for his clan to pull back to the Western area of the country.

Sukemori went to his aunt's home to say farewell to Sakon. His Aunt, Kenreimon-in was the Mother of the Emperor Antoku. The Heike ordered the eight year old Emperor to retreat to Dazaifu in Kyushu.

However, the ruling authority in Kyushu, Ogata-Koreyoshi, had gone over to the Genji and he ordered the Heike and the child Emperor out of Kyushu. They moved to Yashima on the island of Shikoku, Sukemori attempted to settle the dispute and prevent war.

However, he failed and in the battle of Ichi-no-tani in Kobe the Heike were defeated.

Sukemori's brother, Koremori, lost heart and with his son Rokudai, set out for Kumano in Kishu in order to become a priest.

While down on his luck, Sukemori met Koyuki, a gentle woman who resembled Sakon. Koyuki's father, a nobleman, who had been killed by the Heike under Kiyomori. Koyuki had become a prostitute. As she fell in love with Sukemori, her hatred of the Heike weakened.

Sukemori and his attendants couldn't find relief from their suffering at Yashima. The Genji army was near Yashima. Koyuki brought news of the army to Sukemori. She had discovered that the army was led by Yoshitsune and that it had only one hundred and fifty cavalrymen who were all exhausted after a long march.

Sukemori passed this intelligence along to his uncle, Munemori and advised the Heike leader that the time was right to attack. Munemori lacked the courage and threw away his chance for victory.

Sukemori, his brother Arimori and Tadafusa rejected Munemori's cowardice. They prepared to battle in a last desperate hope for the future of the Heike Clan.
