Suirenshou

A long time ago, a peasant, Kichibei and his daughter Kiku lived a poor life in a lonely village in the province of Oomi. One day, a boy named Gorou came with a big gold carp.

Gorou said that he caught it in a mountain lake, but when Kichibei saw it, he thought it must be the master of the lake, and thought they would receive divine punishment. So he tells Gorou to return it immediately, but Goro didn't listen to Kichibei's suggestion because it was so rare.

Kiku gave Gorou money to hand it over and released it into a stream in a bamboo grove. Eventually, at night, the carp became a beautiful young man, claiming to be Koinosuke and appearing before Kiku.

The two were attracted to each other and joined together, leading a happy life. About two months later, a carp spirit appeared in front of Koinosuke and told him to return to the water world.

Koinosuke was a young man of the Water God Emperor who ruled the water world, so even though he was tied together and had happy days, he could only live in the water world.

Inevitably, Koinosuke lied to Kichibei and Kiku that he had been commanded by the emperor to return to the capital. Kiku grieved, but was suspicious of her husband's daily activities, so she connected the end of a bobbin to the sleeve of her husband.

As Kiku had suspected, the thread led to the lake....
