Scene 3 - Heavenly Rock Cave

In ancient days, Amaterasu Omikami (the Sun Goddess, the ancestor of Japan's Imperial Family) hid herself in a rock cave as her Brother God got riotous. Consequently, according to a legend, the whole world became dark. Thereby, Gods assembled in front of the cave and presented a dance performance.

The Sun Goddess opened the rock door of the cave to peep out. Taking this as a chance, Tojikarao-no Mikoto (Hercules God) opened the door and asked the Sun Goddess to come out again.

In this scene, this Japanese legend is depicted in a form of dance drama.

Indian Love Call

It happened in the hinterlands of Canada. Wanda, a passionate but simple-minded Indian girl and a dancer at Jane's Inn, has been in love with Hawley, a wealthy American pelt dealer, despite the opposition of Black Eagle, her foster-father, who insists that the taboo of their tribe be respected.

But Hawley intends to marry Rosemary, the younger sister of Emile who regards him as one of the successful men of the district. However, Rosemary has been in love with Jim, former notorious rogue. Until he met her, money dice, wine, and girls--all these were his spice of life. But, according to him, "her beauty and tenderness taught me how to live as a human."

One day Black Eagle and Helman, Jim's friend, happen to begin a quarrel about the ownership of gold mines. The Indian persistently insists on his illegal ownership of land owned by Jim and Helman. Then, Jim promises to let him see the deeds which will clarify the owners of the land.

Hawley visits Wanda at Black Eagle's hut to hand over to her a solatium for severing relations with her. She refuses to receive the money but requests his love. At this time, Jim with the deeds visits the hut. In surprise, Hawley hides himself while Wanda tells Jim that Black Eagle is out. Jim leaves the place after asking her to hand over the deeds to her foster-father. Later, Black Eagle returns and finds Hawley there. A fight ensues between the Indian and the furrier who have been at loggerheads and during the fight Wanda fatally stabs her father in order to rescue Hawley.

On the following day Emile, after consultation with Hawley, moves to Cortnespa with Rosemary in order to separate her from Jim. But Jim also moves to the town.

Days later, Jim receives a telegram from his company in Brazil, telling him to call on them immediately. Deciding to go with him to Brazil, Rosemary asks for him to wait for her at the Rose Castle, a hillside hut which she christened so, while she prepares for departure. Police Inspector Malone, together with Wanda, comes to the town to arrest Jim who is being sought by the police on a charge of murdering Black Eagle.

Emile threatens his sister, saying that if she does not consent to marry Hawley, he will tell the whereabouts of Jim to the police inspector. In order to rescue Jim, Rosemary makes up her mind to marry Hawley. But her decision astonishes Wanda, the Indian girl. Now realizing that Hawley has not loved her, Wanda is plunged into despondency while Jim alone leaves for Brazil....

Jane and Helman have been running a bar, "Ballon Rouge", in Quebec. Suddenly Jim calls on the couple. His account is:

While in Brazil, he was told by a certain man from Canada that he has been wanted by the police due to Wanda's testimony that she witnessed Jim killing her foster-father. HE searched for Wanda all over Canada and found her. At first she kept mum about the murder case but at last consented to tell the truth to Malone. He brought her to Quebec, and, simultaneously, asked Malone to come to the city.

Rosemary, however, is suspicious about Jim's actions on the night when Black Eagle was killed. Emile and Hawley intentionally try to make her believe that Jim has had connections with Wanda. Moreover, Wanda reveals how kind Jim is to her and declares that she loves him. (Why she says such a thing no one knows.) In despondency, Jim leaves the city.

The day of Rosemary's wedding with Hawley has come. Wanda meets Hawley and requests his love. But he turns a cold shoulder towards her. The marriage ceremony begins. The Indian girl suddenly interrupts the ceremony, revealing that she killed Black Eagle in order to rescue her lover, Hawley, and that Hawley made love to her, promised to marry her, and then abandoned her. At this Rosemary runs out of the place while Wanda is arrested by Malone.

Days have elapsed but Jim's whereabouts is still unknown. Rosemary returns to Courtnespa and visits the vicinity of the Rose Castle. She wistfully sings the Song of the Echo and hears Jim's voice echoing through the mountain. Guided by his echoing song, she at last reaches the Rose Castle where she finds her lover.
