Meanwhile, in the streets of Paris, Rosalie's mother is killed by the ruthless carriage of a noble. As her mother lies dying, she reveals that Rosalie is adopted, and that her true mother is the Duchess of Polignac. Swearing revenge, Rosalie attempts to kill Oscar's mother, believing mistakenly that she was in the carriage that killed Rosalie's adoptive mother. Oscar stops her and educates her, winning Rosalie's loyalty. As turmoil spreads throughout France, Marie Antoinette becomes determined to do whatever she must to preserve the Bourbon monarchy.

Act II

General Jarjayes decides to marry his daughter to Girodelle. Hearing the plan, Andre decides to kill Oscar and himself rather than let her go. He attempts to poison her wine, but cannot go through with it. Oscar forgives him, and admits that she loves him.

The next day, on the banks of the Seine, Oscar decides to protect the common people, against the orders of her commanders. Andre falls first, and after a bitter battle, Oscar dies as well, but not before learning that the people have captured the Bastille.
