Evening Flute of Shiiba
Set around 1180, the setting is the village of Shiiba in Kyushu, where the remaining members of the defeated Taira Clan are living simply. Among them there is said to be a great beauty in Tsurutomi-hime, but that her face was scared in a fire and her heart is dark and closed off.
Then one day a man named Nasu Daihachirou, who was sent to exterminate the Taira, comes stealthily into the village. At first Daihachirou pretends to have fallen in love with Tsurutomi-hime in order to get close to her, and her darkened and closed heart begins to open up which brings all the village joy. From time to time, Daihachirou's elder brother Yoichi slips into the village.
Yoichi rebukes his brother for truly falling in love with the princess and forgetting his mission. He takes his brother with him and returns to the capitol. When she realizes that Daihachirou had only been pretending to love her, Tsurutomi-hime is saddened and her heart becomes colder than ever.
Unable to forget the princess, Daihachirou leaves the capitol and returns to her. However, he finds her heart closed to him. No matter what he says, she refuses to listen, so he burns his own face with fire from a nearby hearth as proof of his feelings for her.
