An Actor's Revenge
Set in the 19th century, this play focuses on Nakamura Yukinojou (a famous kabuki onnagata), as he carries out a plot to revenge his parents' deaths. He blames Dobe Sansai. For part of his plan, Yukinojou meets with Sansai's daughter, Namiji, who fell in love with him when she saw him perform. Yukinojou convinces the girl to run away with him, and he hides her away. He feels some guilt, however, because as children the two had played together, and he also has fallen in love with Namiji.
His companions in his plotting are his teacher Koken, and the thieves Ohatsu (who is in love with him) and Yamitarou.
One of Sansai's hired men manages to track Namiji down while Yukinojou is away, and reveals to her who Yukinojou really is, and that he is simply using her to revenge his parents' deaths. Realizing the truth, she swoons and falls into a decline, eventually dying. Yukinojou gets his revenge, however, for her father is forced to commit seppuku over the dishonor of his daughter, who had been a concubine of the shogun.
