The Youth of Peter I

A tale of the younger days of the Russian tsar Peter the Great.

1698, a shipyard in Zaandam, Holland.

Tsar Peter I aims to rapidly bring Russia forward from where it lags behind the European nations, so he has brought in efficient engineers, and has himself snuck into a Dutch shipyard in disguise in order to study as a shipwright. He has taken the name Peter Mikhailov and come to the shipyard managed by Widow Braun.

Among the shipwrights is a young man named Peter Ivanov who purports to be a soldier from Russia, and the two Peters become earnest friends. Mikhailov is an aggressive activist, while Ivanov is an unmotivated and idol kind of person who really doesn't seem the type to have taken risks and emigrated. However, although Ivanov can't seem to do any work, he has lost his head over the mayor's niece, Marie. As for Marie, she loves the unreliable Ivanov, but is also attracted to the dignity and bravery of Mikhail.

One day, the Dutch government gives orders to Mayor Van Bet to search the shipyard to smoke out a shipwright named Peter. Unfortunately for them, there are many young men calling themselves Peter, and no one is sure which one the government wants.

When the ambassadors of the European nations that Russia has entered diplomatic relations with learn that the emperor is in disguise, the shipyard goes topsy-turvy!
