Summary

Meadow of Stars

Ishizawa Momiichi lost his parents at a young age and was raised by the ranch owner on a ranch in the northern part of Japan. When the war came, he was conscripted. His life was saved by a war horse named "Tsukisumi." Momiichi was sent to Indochina, but his boat sank in the harbor of Manila. His life was miraculously spared, but he contracted malaria and suffered from amnesia.

After the war, Momiichi returned to the ranch and worked diligently, but he couldn't forget Tsukisumi, lost on the battlefield, and hallucinated the horse. The people around him pitied him.

One summer day a group of gypsies come down out of the mountains. They keep bees, search for medicinal herbs, and use branches to carve rosary beads, and while they do so they play the clarinet, trombone, and violin, living gracefully with all of nature. Momiichi is enraptured by them and their way of living.

Returning home to the ranch, Momiichi is caught in the rain and gets a high fever. In his delirium he leaves his sick room and wanders into the mountains in search of the gypsies, but no matter where he goes he cannot find them.

On a night of shooting stars, Momiichi's beloved Tsukisumi appears with a loud neigh....
