Set in the mid-19th century country of Luxembourg.

That evening, many young noblemen attend a ball held in honor of the Empress Dowager reaching 80 years of age. Among them is Count Hermann, who helps rescue a gypsy girl from danger after being accused of stealing a jeweled necklace.

At the ball Hermann also meets Elena, the fiancee of his friend Franz, and finds her very charming.

At the same time the powerful Duke Karl schemes to make Elena his own, and in order to separate Elena and Franz he sees that the emperor will attend a conference in London, which Franz will have to attend as one of the imperial guard.

Not suspecting a thing, Franz leaves for London, after asking Hermann to watch out for Elena. In this capacity, the two meet often and begin to fall in love.

Now with Hermann in his way, Duke Karl digs up a scandal that Hermann is of gypsy blood, in order to force him away from Elena. Hermann is in shock at the insult of the duke's accusations, and throws himself upon the mercy of a gypsy band.

That same day, Hermann learns that Duke Karl has high-highhandedly stolen Elena for his own and locked her in his house, and so Hermann kills the duke. While Hermann is taking refuge with a band of gypsies, Elena goes to the Empress Dowager to obtain a pardon, and then together with the chief lady-in-waiting she seeks out Hermann.

Just then Franz returns to Luxembourg on furlough. He is aghast to learn for the first time that Hermann and Elena are in love, and that Hermann was forced to kill Duke Karl, and so he follows their trail....
