Beau Brummell
“...Fine. I will show you how it’s done. A thing you could never achieve!”
The society of late eighteenth-century England is rigidly divided by class, determined by birth, while across the sea, France is on the cusp of revolution. Following his father’s wishes, George Brummell, a commoner by birth, is admitted to a prestigious school that would have been forever beyond his reach. A self-made man, his father built a fortune in a single generation.
“In my son’s generation, the Brummell family must rise to the upper class, no matter what.”
By a stroke of luck, George’s father catches a glimpse into the cloister of high society, and his obsessive fixation on class and overwhelming ambition gradually begin to consume and distort his son, too.
After entering university, George finds himself unable to connect with his aristocratic classmates, who live in carefree privilege. Instead, he spends his time downtown with Harriet, an actress he meets there and falls in love with. With Harriet and other friends, he frequents places the self-declared “refined crowd” look down upon. There, his ambition quietly smolders.
George, who is secretly nicknamed Beau Brummell (beautiful Brummell) by his envious classmates, decides to break free and carve out a new life for himself after the death of his father who had controlled him for so long. Inheriting his father’s fortune, he chooses to live as Beau Brummell, wielding his beauty and his wealth as weapons. And that means leaving behind “George from downtown,” and severing all ties with his past, including Harriet...
Beau Brummell captivates people with his refined grooming, impeccable fashion sense, and sharp wit. Before long, Brummell’s growing reputation catches the attention of the Prince of Wales (later King George IV), who contrives to make Brummell’s acquaintance. Having captivated the prince with his charm, thus granting him entry into the ranks of the aristocracy. With a style that radiates cleanliness and elegance in its simplicity, Beau Brummell rises to reign over high society like a king and basks in glory until an unexpected reunion with Harriet, now the Prince’s new mistress, sets him on a path of misfortune…
Beau Brummell is often referred to as the father of dandyism. Enjoy this musical romance that depicts the glory and downfall of a man who rises through England’s class-bound society with his beauty and fashion sense.
Prayer
Since ancient times, people have offered prayers for peace, happiness, hope, dreams, and love—and at times, they offer it in gratitude. These prayers eventually take the form of song, dance, and movement, and through them, they have become the reason to live for tomorrow throughout the course of human history.
Beginning with a prologue that evokes the descent of a great deity in response to prayers from around the world, this fantastical and celebratory revue offers a “prayer” through songs and dance scenes bursting with heartfelt wishes, joy, and blessings. Encompassing the spirit of celebration and hope, this show expresses a deep desire for happiness for all people and the world.
