Gold Hill

Based on the true story of people from Aizu who migrated to Gold Hill in California in the 1870s. A love story between a US Marshal named Henry, and a Japanese girl named Okei.

This tale takes place in 1870, about twenty years before the famed Gold Rush, and only a few men have come in search of gold dust.

Henry, a gambler traveling with the party headed by Julie and her family, arrives and meets Okei, who has immigrated from Japan. When Okei first lays eyes on Henry, she is reminded of her fiance Sakaki Masanojou, who was one of the doomed young warriors of the Aizu White Tiger Unit. But Henry has a deep-seated hatred for the Japanese, for Henry is actually a US Marshal in disguise, on the trail of a murderer known as Cooney, who is Japanese.

Meanwhile, Okei's parents Mr and Mrs Schnell and her younger brother Matsunosuke, despite all their efforts, have not been able to grow mulberry, tea, and rice on their land.

Then Okei's older brother Kuninosuke (Cooney) arrives, bringing pals. An acknowledged killer, Kuninosuke plans to give himself up to the authorities when he is shot to death by his pal Pedro.

When Pedro then turns his gun on Henry, Okei rushes forward to protect him and is hit in the arm.

Henry falls in love with Okei, and vows to throw in his lot with her and act as creditor to the Wakamatsu Colony. The formerly insular Japanese, who had not wanted to ask for loans from the Americans, accept Henry's proposal gratefully, but....

Hallelujah

  • The Wakamatsu Silk and Tea Farm in California was actually settled by Henry Schnell, a Dutchman/Prussian who had worked as an arms dealer and advisor to Japanese daimyo in Japan with his brother for many years. He settled it with his Japanese wife and around 200 Aizu samurai who had fled Japan after their defeat. But the farm was a failure and Henry Schnell and his wife and daughter disappeared after two years. (source: Wikipedia)
  • Final performance for Houzuki Yayoi, Aki Terumi, and Mimi Harumi.
