Casanova, Memento of a Dream

A romantic musical about "the romance that never happened" between Giacomo Casanova (one of the most famous adventurers in love) and Madame de Pompadour (the favorite mistress of King Louis XV).

(summary from official booklet)
In the middle of the 18th century in the Republic of Venetia, Giacomo Casanova was thrown in jail in his hometown. Casanova escaped from jail but years later on the day of the beloved Red Rose Festival he comes home. A priest captures him in Saint Marco Square. It is generally believed that while Casanova was a fugitive he joined an anti-Catholic secret society. He is turned over to a religious court for trial. The Governor-General steps in and orders Casanova to perform on stage the story of his fugitive life.
Seven years ago Casanova fell in love at first sight with a French girl called Jeanne at a festival. Casanova presented a rose to her. A domineering actress was in love with Casanova at that time so he ran away with Jeanne. Later a fortune-teller called Catarani surprised them by saying someday Jeanne would be a queen. Tragically Casanova was arrested for kidnapping Jeanne. The lovers were forced to separate but they promised they would meet again somewhere somehow.
Casanova escaped from prison. He met again the fortune-teller Catarani who was in fact Count de Saint-Germain. The Count took Casanova to Vienna to see Empress Maria Theresia and to Moscow to meet Empress Elizaveta to give them a special medicine that could keep people young. At the palace of Kaiser Friedrich II in Prussia Casanova met the French Ambassador Count Stanville. Count Stanville promised to take Casanova to a masked ball in Paris.
In Paris Count Argenson and Countess Estrades Richelieu and and Damien were plotting to murder king Louis XV. They wanted to get rid of Madame Pompadour, the king's lover. The conspirators were members of a secret society called the Freemasonry.
At the masked ball Casanova danced with a charming lady. While talking he discovered she was his beloved Jeanne. Damien attacked the king at the same moment but Casanova saved the king's life. Count Stanville rushed to the king's side but Damien escaped. Cardinal Vorman told the king that he must throw Madame Pompadour out of his court if he wished to save his life and his throne. The cardinal feared Pompadour because she didn't respect the Church and she was about to publish an encyclopedia which would bring a wide range of knowledge into the hands of many people. The king trusted his mistress completely and refused to listen to anyone who criticuzed her. Louis XV invited Casanova to Pompadour's palace Bellevue.
Pompadour told Casanova how she hated the Prussian fraction headed by Count Argenson. She said the Count was always trying to manipulate the king for his own political ends. She said she had to protect the king who was politically naive. Casanova knew he would never give up his love for this remarkable woman.
Louis XV and Count Stanville came to Bellevue to tell Madame Pompadour that Cardinal Vorman had ordered her to be burned at the stake. Pompadour fainted on hearing the terrible news and asked for some special medicine. The king ordered Stanville to go get the medicine from Count de Saint-Germain.
Saint-Germain was at the home of his patron Madame Duelve. A meeting of the Freemasonry was being held when Casanova arrived, so Casanova decided the best way to get the medicine for his beloved was to join the Freemasonry. Casanova discovered that Count Argenson had made Cardinal Vorman a member as a part of his plan to gain control of the churches. Casanova was given the medicine in return for becoming a Freemasonry.
Casanova secretly made his was back into Bellevue and gave the medicine to Madame Pompadour. She said that Saint-Germain had already given the same medicine to the king and in return the Freemasonry was allowed to operate. Since Freemasonry was controlled by Friedrich II of Prussian in effect a sort of alliance had been created between Prussia and France. Pompadour thought this alliance was a mistake because it could involve France in a war with Austria.
Count de Saint-Germain ordered Damien and Madame Duelve to attack Louis XV. The king was seriously wounded. If the king died Argenson and the Prussia would get rid of Madame Pompadour immediately. So to help his true love Casanova decided to ssek help from Empress Maria Theresia in Vienna.
Casanova to see Saint-Germain, the evil master sho had perverted science and medicine to control people. They fought and in the end Saint-Germain was killed by an electric shock from the machine he produced.
Casanova then went to Vienna and gave the Empress a letter from Madame Pompadour. The letter so impressed Maria Theresia that she decided to make an alliance of three nations - Russia, France and Austria. Thus, Pompadour defeated the Prussian fraction. Pompadour's happiness helped speed the king's recovery.
...Casanova had now come to the end of his story. Since he hed admitted to being a Freemasonry, Casanova was arrested. Count Stanville brought the Church's decision: Casanova was to be exiled. Exile, rather than a more severe punishment. was a favor Madame Pompadour had begged from the Church. She never came to Saint Marco Square. Casanova left her a message with Stanville that he would always love her, only her. The Casanova let Venetia forever.
