Hollywood star Richard Taylor is feeling drained by the attention from his fans and wishes he could spend a quiet, slow day away from the limelight.
One day, Norma Sheridan, his co-worker, comes to tell him that his crazed fans waiting for him at the theater for autographs had mobed someone who had been hurt and taken away in an ambulance. After Richard's manager says he is planning to send him to New York for an appearance, he finds another man in his bedroom who looks just like him. Both men are astonished, and Richard realizes this man must have been the one mistakenly mobbed by his fans.
The man is William Russel, a pineapple farmer from Hawaii, who is visiting to gain a little sophistication with his lover Ruth. Richard thinks William's life sounds perfect, so the two men hatch a plan to switch places. William will go to New York, and Richard will go to Hawaii.
On the boat to Hawaii, Richard meets Joan and her friend Rosalie, who are headed for the Honolulu Royal Hawaiian Hotel, and he falls for Joan. When she first sees him, Joan thinks he is the popular star Richard, but then believes his words that he is William. Joan hears on the news that "Richard" has been shot by a crazy fan in New York City, but the real Richard remains oblivious. He is studying tour guides so that he can give Joan a tour when they arrive. When he arrives at William's house, everyone believes he is William, except the houseboy Ken, who has a letter from the real William explaining the situation.
Meanwhile, Ruth thinks her boyfriend is acting very oddly, but stays quiet. She invites him to her house for a welcome home party, but while there Richard inadvertently tells a story of buying a car that has Ruth's father George up in arms. Before they left, George had loaned William a significant amount of money, and now he thinks that William spent it on an expensive car. Caught, Richard admits that he is actually the star Richard Taylor, but no one believes him.
Finally escaping back to William's Richard is confronted by Joan, who accuses him of having a girlfriend. When he explains that he is actually Richard to her, she then accuses him of cheating on his fiancee Norma, which startles him. She shows him a New York paper, which is running an announcement of his engagement to Norma. Ken is soon shocked to hear the news that "William" and Ruth's wedding date has been set.
Meanwhile, not knowing what has been going on at home, William has boarded a clipper bound for Hawaii. He makes it back just in time, as Richard pretends to have forgotten the ring and slips off. When Joan sees William and Richard together, she realizes the truth.
William and Ruth and Richard and Joan enjoy a fun honeymoon in Hawaii.
