In Paris in the later half of the 19th century, the playboy-ish young nobleman Florestan spends money extravagantly, causing nothing but trouble for his father the vicomte. His father devided a plan to marry him to the heiress Hélène. If he refuses, on the one hand he will be hounded to pay his enormous amount of debts, and his conduct is carefully watched by Baron Merletto & Loustot, because he has ruined himself gambling.
With all of this in mind, Florestan goes to the flower shop owned by his old friend Agathe Coquenard to end their acquaintance. Whereupon, by chance, Hélène and her aunt eavesdrop on Florestan & Agathe's parting words. When Elain hears Florestan saying things such as "country girl...", she becomes resentful. She changes her name to Véronique and approaches Florestan. Because he is lost in the dream of Véronique, Florestan is arrested by the watchdog Merlotte.....
