The Tale of a Cow Herder
The Dawn of the Heian Period.
Tachibana no Chuunagon's first-born, nicknamed Yarusena-hime, is a beautiful, kind princess. However, she is bullied and mistreated by her step-mother and step-sisters.
Today, too, she finds fault in the food that Yarusena-hime had cooked for the flower-viewing banquet. The only ones to console the princess are her maid Kuchiba and the herd boy Goroumaru
At that moment, the Sakon no Shoushou holds a shell-matching game party in the imperial palace, and they say that anyone who brings a rare shell will have a chance at his hand. In other words, he will choose his wife at this party.
In the Chuunagon's household, Kita no Kata's daughters bring out their shells, but they are all rather plain. When they hear that Yarusena-hime has a rare painted shell that is a keepsake of her mother, they have a servant steal it and bring it to the Sakon no Shoushou.
Some days later, the Sakon no Shoushou sends his attendant to the Chuunagon's household. Goroumaru dresses as a noble and enters with them.
It is then that the attendant declares that the Sakon no Shoushou has said that the painted shell was stolen from the imperial palace ten years ago, and the attendant has been sent to investigate and find the thief.
What will happen next?
