Act I: Flowers of Spring
Maidens appear carrying branches of wisteria. Soon, four young men follow and dance.

The green bamboo and colored paper of Tanabata, a scene of the star festival on a starry night. Children dressed in the seven colors of the colored paper dance as if blown by the wind.

Act III: Moon of Autumn
The scene is an autumn festival night under the red light of the moon. A maiden dressed as a turtle and two young man dressed as young birds dance together. Then a young man in the guise of a pale-skinned hero appears and the girl dances off with him. The moon looks down and laughs.

Act IV: Snow of Winter
Snow falls on a frozen lake. A crane maiden appears and dances, but then she gets caught in a blizzard and falls. Soon only the snow is left.

Elegy of a White Flower
Young Prince Selim had married Queen Alimand three years previously, but it was a loveless marriage. Selim left for Europe toa llow the love to bud, but after his father's death is returning to his home country of Udaigol. On the boat trip home he meets the singer Audrey and is smitten. Audrey also falls in love with him, not knowing he is the new king of Udaigol and despite the fact that she is traveling with her fiance Major Carter.
In Udaigol, Major Carter meets and falls in love with Silvia, daughter of the ambassador. Audrey and Selim's love affair becomes a scandal, and the ambassador orders Audrey to return to England. Just as she is getting on the plane, she learns that Major Carter and Silvia have gotten engaged. Selim appears and tells her that he is willing to throw aside his crown so that they can go off and live happily together. But Audrey tells him she does not want a penniless, rankless existence in East Asia and that she will be returning to England.
Meanwhile, Queen Alimand, who has lost Selim's love and her will to remain in the world, takes poison as she wishes Selim and Audrey well. When Selim hears of this he is determined to also drink the poison and join her, but his people convince him not to. A sad Selim returns to his palace.
