(rough translation of Japanese summary, by jenebi)
A time of civil war. In the whirlwind, retainers fight lords through disguised treachery, and a lucky adventurer can struggle towards a dream. In this age of upheaval, one man passes his short life by overcoming ordinary desire. That man's name was Ishikawa Goemon. The name is famous as that of a legendary thief. Weaving together his life, his comrades, his secret love, all are blended into this tale of adventure and action with up-tempo numbers.
An age of civil war. Ishikawa Bungo and his lover Hatsune, along with four young men, disappear from the Iga Ninja clan. Under ninja law, traitors must be "erased," yet they are determined to escape the gruesome hell of the ninja existence. However, the ninja Kirigakure Saizou is sent after the betrayers to take their lives.
Having snuck away from the town of Iga, Bungo and the others meet a single samurai at Okehazama just after the battle between Oda Nobunaga and Imagawa Yoshimoto. This man, who did not seem high-born, called himself Kinoshita Toukichirou. This meeting would change Bungo's fate forever.
Bungo and Hatsune wander aimlessly. The others with whom they escaped gradually leave to pursue their own dreams. A vision comes to Bungo of the mother who threw him away. Hatsune, always beside him, has taken the place of his mother. The two set off to try to find out about Bungo's mother. However, as they travel westward, the pair are set-upon by bandits. The imprisoned Bungo is at last tracked down by Saizou. Secretly in love with Hatsune, Saizou has a bitter grudge against Bungo. Bungo barely manages to escape him.
The bandit leader Matagi is so impressed by Bungo, that he invites him to join them. They will attack the corrupt officials who line their own pockets, and distribute the money they steal back to the needy. Bungo, who before had thought of nothing but escape, has a change of heart. He throws away the reputation of Bungo and is reborn with a new name: Ishikawa Goemon. However, even as Goemon sets off on a new beginning, Saizou and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who still uses the name Kinoshita Toukichirou, secretly pursue him...
