Farewell, Madeleine

A tale set in 17th century France, in Blois, a town in the Dukedom of Orleans, far from Paris.

The Marquis of Monterey has gained more honor than the Duke of Orleans, and a celebratory ball is to be held in the Trene. The marquis' son Francois and his lover Madeleine are in attendance.

Madeleine's beauty catches the eye of the Duke of Orleans and without heeding Francois he takes her away to his own chateau.

Having lost his lover, Francois searches for a new life for himself, eventually leaving his home to be a pirate with a friend and former noble, Jean Louis.

Francois becomes a pirate so that he can meet Madeleine again, but meanwhile Madeleine's love for Francois fades. She becomes accustomed to living in luxury and grows haughty and vulgar.

Unable to bring Madeleine away, Francois nevertheless cannot forget her and aims for another chance to reclaim her.

That chance arrives at last. The pirates attack one of Orleans' ships that Madeleine is on, and steal everything, including Madeleine before returning to their pirate lair.

But then the Marquis of Monterey arrives, intending to capture his son by his own hand.

When a gun is pointed at the resisting Francois, Madeleine leaps forward with no thought of herself....
