The Rose of Granada

It is a time when the southern part of Spain is Moorish and still separate from the rest of Spain. In the kingdom of Granada, King Amal has decided to build the most beautiful castle in the world, but he is cursed by a demon and loses not only his wife but also the castle is destroyed mysteriously. The gypsy elder appears before King Amal one day and gives him a pearl which he says will drive off enemy armies, before telling him that in order for Granada to be at peace he needs to drive away Fernando, son of his second wife Queen Rosalia and abdicate the throne to his daughter Catalina, who is the spitting image of her deceased mother.

Soon the castle is nearly complete and the princess will become a ruler soon when she marries Prince Antonio of Catalonia. The sad day has arrived for Queen Rosalia's beloved child Fernando to meet his sad fate. At the same time, the king of Catalonia is plotting to steal Granada's magic pearl and its prosperity by using Queen Rosalia's grief and have her steal the magic pearl during the commotion of the wedding with the promise that he will put Fernando on the throne of Granada. With his plans nearly complete, the king of Catalonia waits for his son Antonio's return. Fernando becomes a nuisance, so he plots out how to kill him with his servant Jose. Learning of this, Rosalia goes to her king and confesses the plot. Antonio is horrified by his father's duplicity, and plans to rescue the pearl.

The king of Catalonia finds out and in his anger strikes out. Rosalia is killed protecting her son Fernando, and in the uproar Antonio grabs the pearl and returns to Granada. With Fernando as his witness, Catalina believes that Antonio was innocent of his father's treachery. God rewards their innocent love with crimson and white roses, and black roses for Rosalia. The kingdom of Granada eventually comes to Fernando.
