Black Daffodil of Srinagar
The early 19th century. In the capital of Kashmir, the city of Srinagar, one of hte key men has died, leaving Queen Madhuri to manage the government alone with the aid of Crown Prince Amrita. In the spring, when the Sonu festival is finished, one of the members of the royal family is chosen to be the next king — Rahim, the young lord of Saptaparna castle. In the fall, he will marry Princess Astana.
Invited to the festival as usual by Gollum, the mayor of Sonu, Rahim goes along with Commander Dagon and the staff officer Dilip. But on the day before coronaton, he is slipped a sleeping drug during a banquet. The one who put the drug in his cup was the dancing girl, Cante. She is in cahots with Bhadur, lord of Pahmati Castle, and she hurries to tell him that his plan to get the crown and Princess Astana is a success.
Faced with a still-sleeping Rahim, Dagon and Dilip are in trouble — just at that moment, a shabby-looking man passes by. His name is Chandra, and he has come to the Himalayas in search of a jewel. He and Rahim could be two peas in a pod, and so he is set up to go through the coronation ceremony, while Rahim is left in Gollum's care.
The next day, aided by Dagon and Dilip, Chandra makes it through the ceremony. Bhadur and the Englishman Gielgud, who is in league with him, are shocked. Bhadur realizes the deception, and sends out his men to find the real Rahim, who is then imprisoned in his dungeon. But as this is happening, Astana is enjoying herself with Madhri and Amrita at balls and garden parties. Bhadur attempts to take Chandur's life, but he will nit be killed so simply.
Since she was a little girl, Astana has been dreaming that she would one day be Rahim's wife. Not knowing of the deception, the hopeful Astana opens her heart to him, and at last offers him the Black Daffodil. She expains to him: "This flower binds together the giver and the one who recieves it, so that if one of them should betray that love, misfortune will befall them."
One day, Cante enquires after Dagon. She has learned that Bhadur's heart belongs to Astana and in her jealousy has come to show them the way to the dungeon where Rahim is a prisoner. She unlocks the front gate for them, and they are able to slip into the dungeon. But at that moment they are surrounded by Bhadur and his men, who sensed the danger. Chandra and Bhadur fight one-to-one, and Bhadur breathes his last. Cante is unable to part with him, even in death.
Before Astana's very eyes at the wedding ceremony, Chandra appears in his Brahman guise and is paid by Amrita. When she sees the Black Daffodil in the hands of the one who looks so like Rahim, she perceives everything. After the girl is held back, Chandra sets out on his journey, holding the Black Daffodil carefully against his chest.
