Amakusanada of the Flame
The tale of Amakusa Shirou, the driven young man who became a supreme commander at only 16 or 17.
Masuda Shirou (later Amakusa Shirou), arrives at Nagasaki to study. He lodges with Wang Yiguan, a man from Ming (Dynasty - China) and an old friend of Father Jinbee.
Shirou mingles with foreigners and dreams of embarking to distant lands. At the same time, his lover Kiku comes to Nagasaki. Having seen the miserable plight of the farmers of Amakusa, she plans to stage a revolt against the Shogunate government. When she asks Shirou to lead the revolt, he bluntly refuses, saying it is too soon and they would die in vain.
Meanwhile, Shirou's childhood friend Emosaku has a lover named Tae, who refuses to bend to poverty and is working in the Red District under the name of Yuuzuki to support her family.
Shirou and Emosaku are both Christians, but a fervid belief in God does not prevent harsh reality, nor help solve the suffering of the people. While Shirou believes an uprising at this time would be a mistake, he cannot restrain the innocent faith of Emosaku and the others.
At that time, Christians begin to be hunted down, as Taga Mondo and other become aware of the plans for an uprising.
Yuuzuki, a Christian, is assaulted, persecuted, and tortured to force her to reveal the ringleader. When Shirou hears of Mondo's despicable acts, for the sake of the Christians, for the people of Amakusa, he rises up on the night of the Suwa Festival....
