Touge no Manzai

In Kitayama, in mountain villages where snow still remains, children are having fun playing with Hina dolls before the Doll's Festival. At the pass, Umako leisurely sings Umako-uta as he passes by.

Saizo and Tayu went from town to town and village to village during the New Year holidays, but today they parted ways at this mountain pass. The two, who regretted parting, decided to dance their final manzai here.

"Having prospered for generations, congratulations, congratulations, congratulations, congratulations, congratulations to him."

The warblers crowed for a while to match the two's manzai.

"Spring is already here..."

Dragon and Phoenix Dreams

Set in ancient China, where a splendid feast was held in the court to celebrate the New Year. The emperor came up with the idea of bringing together the sons of the Dragon clan and the daughters of the Phoenix clan.

In other words, the eldest son of the Dragon clan, Yutong, married the second daughter of the Phoenix clan, Meimei, and the eldest daughter of the Phoenix clan, Niangniang, married the second son of the Dragon clan, Baotong.

Mama, the widow of the Dragon clan, took her sons to the lotus pond shrine where they worshiped their ancestors. After the three of them came to the lotus pond, Meimei and Niangniang, who had been invited by Baotong, arrived. Some female thieves were hanging around the shrine. Their leader was Lumudan (Green Peony), and she slyly deceived the Dragon and Phoenix clans that she and the other thieves were ghosts.

Minister Yuebing was determined to capture the female thieves in order to settle the grudge.

Winter passed and spring came, and Minister Yuebing was finally able to catch Lumudan (who had snuck into the Qingming Festival banquet). Also, although the pairings of the Phoenix clan and Dragon clan were a little different, there would be a wedding ceremony between Yutong and Niangniang, and Baotong and Meimei. That night, however, Lumudan's thieves rushed to rescue their leader, throwing the happy wedding into chaos.

Fifty years later, in the spring, the golden wedding ceremony of the Phoenix and Dragon clans was held. The final participants were Yutong and Meimei, Baotong and Lumudan (actually Niangniang's younger sister, Lili), tenant farmers Wanglang and Fufu, and the manservant Balang and Niangniang.

How did this turn out to be...?
