Oiran and Her Son

The port of Nagasaki, full of an exotic atmosphere

Today, as usual, a Dutch ship was at anchor in the port, and the streets of Nagasaki were bustling with the visiting people, including Dutch sailors and tradesmen. Among them was a Dutch trader, called Hendrik Zuf. He had visited Nagasaki a number of times before. But, he was different from his fellow Dutchmen; he would not feel like loving Japanese girls as readily as others did.

Now, however, an opportunity dawned upon Zuf, when even he had to know that he was in real love. That was when he met Tsuru, a local courtesan. The moment he cast his eyes on the beautiful woman, he felt himself enthralled by love, for which he would not hesitate to sacrifice his very life.

Zuf and Tsuru were now deeply in love. Their desire was that they could be in love forever; they were united in the midst of the season of spring, when cherry blossoms were in full bloom everywhere. And, ten long years passed along. A boy had been born to them, and he, Joukichi by name, had now grown into a boy of ten years in age. He, however, was a half-breed, and, was predestined to suffer on that account.

A great misfortune soon befell the Zuf family. A war had broken out between Holland and Spain. Zuf had to return to his home country to fight as a soldier. Tsuru and her son had to remain Nagaski, however, for the State law, then in force, prohibited any Japanese national to sail abroad.

Zuf left Japan, committing Tsuru, his wife, and Juokichi, his son, in the care of some of his Japanese friends in Nagasaki.

Another eight years passed on. Joukichi was now a lad of 17 years in age.

After Zuf left, however, Tsuru fell sick with consumption, and, during these years, her condition steadily worsened, and, at length, on the night of the Festival for the Souls of the Departed, she passed away, dearly thinking of her husband, separated for so many years, and worrying about the future of her beloved son.

Matsudaira Zushonokami, the Magistrate of Nagasaki, was so deeply sympathetic of the sad fate of Joukichi, that he offered his good offices to employ him as a petty official of the Magistrate’s office. Joukichi, however, could not free himself from the predestined sorrows of being a Eurasian. To make things worse, he, too, came to suffer from the same disease which had proved fatal to his poor mother.

It chanced about this time that a Dutch ship was chased into the port of Nagasaki by a Spanish battleship. A battle started between the two opposing ships, making the town of Nagasaki aflame with war fires. And, it was rumored that Zuf was aboard the Dutch ship, which was sinking under gunfire.
