Never Say Goodbye

  • Frank Wildhorn is the first Western composer commissioned by Takarazuka to create a new musical - Never Say Goodbye.

  • The show was performed in 2006 by Cosmos Troupe, and was the final performance for Wao Youka and Hanafusa Mari, among others.

The Scarlet Pimpernel

  • Frank wrote The Scarlet Pimpernel with Nan Knighton, based on the series of books by Baroness Emmuska Orczy. The show premiered on Broadway in 1997, and has been performed around the world.



Non-Takarazuka Projects

Jekyll & Hyde

  • Frank Wildhorn created a musical version of Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The show was first conceived for the stage with Steve Cuden, and has lyrics by Leslie Bricusse.

  • Jekyll had its world premiere at the Alley Theatre in Houston, Texas, USA in 1990. It opened on Broadway in 1997 and played for four years, becoming the longest-running show in the history of the Plymouth Theatre. It has played numerous tours and productions around the world and has been recorded in several langauages.

  • The Japanese premiere of the show took place in 2001 and has returned for a total of four seasons so far. In the fourth season (2007, in Osaka and Nagoya), Kouju Tatsuki played the role of Lucy.


Rudolf - The Last Kiss

  • Rudolf - The Last Kiss tells the tragic story of Austrian Crown Prince Rudolf and Mary Vetsera, based loosedly on the book A Nervous Splendor by Frederic Morton. The lyrics for the show were written by Jack Murphy, with additional lyrics by Nan Knighton, and the script was by Jack Murphy and Phoebe Hwang.

  • The show had its world premiere at the Operett Színház in Budapest, Hungary, 26 May 2006. It has played twice at the summer festival in Szeged, Hungary, and continues to play in Budapest.

  • The second production to take place was the Japanese production, presented by Toho Musical & Play in Tokyo from 6 May through 1 June 2008. Kouju Tatsuki performed in the show as Countess Larisch.


Mitsuko

  • Frank is working on a new musical with Koike Shuuichirou about Mitsuko Aoyama, the first Japanese woman to marry a westerner.

  • A concert of songs from the show was presented on 9 December 2005 in Vienna, Austria. Ichiro Maki performed in the concert as Mistuko.


  • Another concert presentation of the show took place in Japan in March 2010, combined with a "Frank Wildhorn & Friends" concert. Aran Kei sang the role of Mitsuko, and also joined the "Friends" program singing selections from Pimpernel and Never Say Goodbye. Performances were at Bunkamura Orchard Hall in Tokyo and Umeda Arts Theater in Osaka.

Cyrano

  • Frank and his Jekyll & Hyde co-creator Leslie Bricusse are developing a musical version of Edmond Rostand's classic Cyrano de Bergerac.

  • The show had its Japanese premiere at the Nissay Theatre in Tokyo, 5-28 May 2009. Asami Hikaru played the part of Roxanne.

  • He is married to former Cosmos Troupe top star Wao Youka, as of July 26, 2015. They first met when he was commissioned by Takarazuka to create the show that would be Wao's last as top star, Never Say Goodbye.
