Review of Paris Festival 2001

This is a little (only about an hour and fifteen minutes long) Star Troupe show that was held at a hotel – basically, a Dinner Show. It features Aran Kei, Yumeki Noa, Asazumi Kei, Matobu Sei, and six young musumeyaku who no doubt have individual personalities – personalities that were in no way evident.

Now, this show is a little sneaky – because although all four otokoyaku are featured on the cover, in truth this is a thinly disguised Aran Kei vehicle. Yumeki Noa gets a couple singing numbers, but Asazumi Kei and Matobu Sei are an interchangeable duo. And most of the three’s numbers are worked around Aran’s costume changes. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing – as a Touko fan, it doesn’t really bother me, but you should know what you’re getting into. Personally, I was kind of hoping for just a bit more Nettan (Yumeki) stage time.

Once you understand that this is really Aran’s show, you know what to expect – a LOT of singing. Touko likes to sing, and she particularly likes to sing "Chanson," so the dancing and acting take a backseat. Aran sings torch song after torch song – I halfway wonder why she didn’t go into enka instead of Takarazuka. No particular song stood out to me after my first viewing – I thought her chanson selections were a little more interesting in 1999’s "Wonder Three."

Oh, one warning – this show features a great deal of completely gratuitous "otokoyaku in drag" – that is, playing women. Everyone but Aran gets to trot out the wigs and slinky dresses, looking uncomfortable and like they’re not sure what they’re doing. Actually, I take that back – Yumeki dances through Aran’s "Omoide no Natsu" and looks quite sweet and pretty, aside from the very obvious long black wig. *sigh* I miss Nettan. She retired just when I was really starting to like her.

When Yumeki did look uncomfortable was during the doo-wop version of "Sumire no Hana Saku goro." This was really cute, and worked quite well, but Nettan looked so stiff and uncomfortable that I just wanted to reach through the television, pat her on the shoulder, and tell her she was doing just fine. She was so tense! She also made a bit of a mess of "Inch Allah" – Touko did this song back in "Wonder Three" and it was quite moving, but Yumeki overdid it a bit, like she was trying too hard.

There were also a couple MCs, which I consider prime Japanese instructional time – since there’re no visual cues to tell me what they’re talking about, I have to go on dialogue alone. They talked a bit about the (then) current all-country tour of Gone With the Wind, and Asazumi (I think it was her, but she and Matobu were pretty interchangeable in this, and I’m not that familiar with either...) told a story about trying to walk to the beach, which she’d been told was only a ten minute walk away – she walked and walked, but she still couldn’t even see it! Aran said that she also went to the beach, but she caught a taxi. ;) There was another MC, where they introduced the "kawaii" musumeyaku – all I can remember is that one of them was talking about how she liked to take pictures, stick them in her journal, and then write about them. One of the otokoyaku asked if she ever took pictures of herself to put in there, and she said she did, and Touko called her a narcissist.

In the end, this show was cute, but nothing special. A few songs, some MCs, an encore or two. The lack of plot makes it relaxing to watch, and there’s plenty of Touko goodness if you’re a fan – and that’s about it. It wasn't really memorable
