I Love You

In 20th century Paris, a farewell reception is being held after the funeral of Count Henri de Charette, a millionaire who had founded many enterprises. The count's will is made public in the course of the reception. The will says that his eldest son George will succeed the count with the stipulation that he marry a woman of either blue blood or high society within half a year. François de Villepin, an executive of the industrial group owned by the Charette family, declares at the top of his lungs that his daughter Célimène is the most suitable bride for George. Hearing Villepin's declaration, Georges complains to his friends Philinte and Alceste that he is not at all ready to get married. He dreams of marrying and loving forever a woman destined to cross his path. He feels oppressed by the idea of getting married merely to fulfill his father's will. Philinte tells George to go easy, advising him that marriage is one thing and love another. He then leads George to a revue theater he knows well. George, who gets drunk at the theater, remembers his father's advice in the will: Go to church when in distress. He heads for a church. However, on the way to the church, he falls down. At the moment he thinks in fading consciousness that he is freezing to death, he saw the angel.

George learns upon waking that he was saved by Marquise, whom he took for an angel, and brought into the backstage of a circus tent. Father Léon, a longtime friend of the count, is in the tent and asks George why he got drunk. Georges tells him what is troubling him --- "I have been living free from care and obtained whatsoever I wanted. Now I must pay for the life I have led. I am stuck with the conditions my father's will requires me to satisfy, yet I do not want to marry. I feel lonely." Marquise no sooner hears George explaining his difficulties to Father than she hits George on the head with a washbowl. In a fury she challenges him, saying that he can accomplish so many good deeds if he is really well-off. Whereas she goes away complaining that she should not have saved such a good-for-nothing fellow, George is deeply impressed by her words: "You can accomplish so many good deeds."

Alceste has been in love with Célimène for some time. He knows that her father wishes her to marry his good friend Georges, therefore he is in a quandary. In fact, Célimène also likes Alceste, so much so she often asks him what he thinks of her. However, he is reluctant to answer clearly and often says that he cannot betray George, his good friend. Exasperated, she involuntarily declares to Alceste that she will marry George.

George returns to the circus tent accompanied by Father Léon and learns that Marquise devotedly looks after not only the catering for the circus performers but also the management, although she is the star trapeze artist of the troupe. George is shocked when Father Léon reveals that Marquise regularly donates money to the church in order to help the poor. The performers, who have decided to defect to another troupe, come before Marquise with their baggage packed. She tries to detain them and provokes a petty quarrel with them. Argan, who left Marquise's company to become producer of the bigger circus company Cirque de Mer, comes in. He invites Marquise's colleagues to join his company which can give them opportunities to play all over the world. He also tells them outdated circuses such as Marquise's cannot attract audiences any longer, and that circuses must evolve to become much more stately. Marquise retorts that the circus company is just like a family whose members help each other, and that the circus should, she believes, provide as much spectacular entertainment as possible for the most economical admission fee. Georges listens to the argument from the beginning to the end. Shortly afterward, Marquise tells George that Argan is her ex-lover and that she rents the circus site from a noble, who is pressing her to move. Upon hearing her story, George realizes that the noble must be François de Villepin. He tells her he will take care of the negotiation with the landlord.

Georges calls on Villepin and tells him that he would like to buy the land that the circus company is renting. Villepin replies that George should marry Célimène as soon as possible in order to assume his position at the head of the Charette family, instead of becoming involved in the circus. However, Georges insists that Villepin should make the best of the circus site. A few days later, Georges returns to the circus tent, where Marquise embraces him saying that she has received from the landlord a letter that allows her company to stay for one more season. She thanks him for his good deeds. In the natural course of events, they feel attracted to each other.

A birthday party is held for Marquise in the circus tent. While George and the troupe, including Charles and Lucille, are merrily celebrating the birthday with affectionate presents, Argan shows up unnoticed and tries to seduce the troupe into making money by playing in the United States. The troupe retorts that they prefer the life in which they help each other and that they set a great value on their ability as circus performers to offer the audience laughter and joy. Argan leads Marquise out of the tent and proposes to her. He then reminds her of the fact that the landlord is allowing her to stay for only one more season, so that she cannot give a performance in Paris in the following year. He promises her that he will employ the entire troupe if she marries him and joins his company. She vacillates. After Argan has left, she tells Georges that she is not sure if she should refuse to marry Argan. Georges accuses her of giving up her dream. However, she replies that he who would marry no one but a noblewoman or woman of high society has no right to reproach her. He is speechless. Left alone, he realizes that he loves her, indeed, and wants her to pursue her dreams. He starts pondering over what he can do for her.
