Scenes 6-13 People Who Love Flowers

Long, long ago, in the castle town of Nijiga in the depths of the Hida region, there lived a young couple, Hanawaka and Kasumi, who grew flowers. They lived a trusting, happy life together, though they were not rich. Hanawaka believed that beautiful flowers from Mother Nature were the best thing to soften the hearts of the villagers, who were exhausted from the many wars taking place at that time. He thus did not heed the comments of the villagers that he should cultivate crops for food rather than flowers. Instead, he worked hard to grow the most beautiful narcissi.

In Hida was an old, rare cherry tree called Usuzumino-sakura, which had suffered from the ongoing fighting in the area. Hanawaka, who had been abandoned as a newborn baby at the foot of such a cherry tree, was determined to tend this tree until it bloomed again.

Yumenosuke, the young lord of Nijiga Castle, saw the couple when he was out in the town with his servant. Yumenosuke, who was good-natured and unworldly, promised Hanawaka that he would grant him any wish if Hanawaka managed to get the cherry tree to bloom. Yumenosuke also said that Kasumi was as lovely as her actual name, before he headed back to the castle. Well, did Yumenosuke's comment cause a misunderstanding! The villagers made a big fuss because they thought Yumenosuke had fallen in love with Kasumi. Before they knew it, she was taken away to the castle.

Sixty years passed. The cherry tree bloomed brilliantly as a result of Hanawaka's efforts. He thus asked Yumenosuke to return Kasumi as his reward. But Yumenosuke did not know Kasumi's whereabouts. Though Kasumi had been taken to the castle many years back, she had been forgotten. Yumenosuke apologized for his unthinking behavior which brought about this tragedy.

Hanawaka felt that any man who loves flowers must be inherently good, so he did not feel resentment toward Yumenosuke.

Kasumi was returned, and met Hanawaka after a sixty-year separation. Under the blooming cherry tree, they embrace each other, bridging their long-standing pain and aging. Their love moves everyone around them.
