Summary

WARNING!! MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!!

(Summary from the official English section of the Tokyo program, awkward English preserved. Most name spellings and obvious typos fixed.)

Act I - Sun Wukong (The Teachings of Buddhism)

Four Japanese young men, having their own respective aims, started on their journey of exploring the Silk Road.

On the stage has turned out a scene of the age of "Tang" in China about 1,500 years ago. Sanzang Fashi, a Buddhist priest, was continuing his agonizing traveling to India, ardently searching for the canon of Buddhism.

The situation wherein how the Buddhist priest, by making Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing as his disciples, gets over all kinds of difficulties shall be depicted in a comedian touch.

Act II - Genghis Khan (A Road in the Grassland)

On the stage was unfurled a village called Ongilert in the early part of the 13th century. There a young man called Temujin-this name was changed to Genghis Khan in later days, was having a happy and tranquil time together with Börte, his fiancee. It was at this moment that Mönglik, a messenger on a post-horse came hastening to the spot and brought a news to the effect that Yesügei Khan, the father of Temujin was murdered by a Tartar by use of poison.

The subordinate of personnel of Yesügei Khan, having lort their master, were greatly excited and disturbed. As the result, the men under the command of Yesügei Khan left their deceased master one by one until finally Mönglik, the uncle of Temujin also deserted the village by turning his back on Temujin.

Hereupon, Temujin concluded an intimate tie with Toghrul Khan, bother father and his son, who had been the staunch friends of the Temujin family from the age of his father. At this juncture, Hachiun, a younger of Temujin, told the alarming news that the Merkit tribe attacked the village all of a sudden, and kidnapped Börte, the wife of Temujin. It soon became apparent that the attack of the Merkit tribe was its revenge against Yesügei Khan, the father of Temujin, who had, twenty years ago, snatched Hoelun, the bride (mother of Temujin) of Merkit.

Under the circumstances, Temujin, by leading a large army consisting of about 20,000 soldiers under the command of Toghrul Khan, marched on into the great dusty desert in order to snatch back Börte.

Act III - Marco Polo (The Way of the Cultural Exchange between East and West)

Marco Polo is now being confined in a prison at Genoa. He told about all what he had seen, and all about the conditions in different countries which he had visited to the prisoners in the same gaol: but none of them was inclined to believe in what Marco Polo had narrated.

The scene here represents a slave market. Marco Polo when he was still a youngster, was walking on the street with Nicholo Polo, the father, and Maffeo Polo, the uncle, encountered with beggars, the mother and her child.

These were the sad figures of the former Princess and the prince Alat of the Kasuvin Kingdom.

Being beaten in a war, the King was dead, Prince Alat became blind and the Princess Melva went astray. Thus, the princess and the Prince Alat started on a wandering journey. Whereupon, a female slave came along escaping from a harem. She was none but Melva herself. Soon, however, she was arrested by a guard and taken away.

Marco Polo secretly made his way into the underground prison, and saved Melva out of the jail. Then, Marco Polo, taking the prince and princess with him, was running away into the desert where a cloud of dust was raging hard and strong. Lo! The princess and the prince suddenly disappeared in the roaring desert as if they were misguided by the God of Death. No one could know where they had gone.

After this incident, three years passed by.

Marco Polo arrived at Kanba Leak (Beijing) the then capital of Cathay Province in China, and was granted an audience with Kublai Khan, the emperor of the country. It so happened that the emperor was favorably impressed by the emperor, and that Marco Polo was taken into the service of the emperor as his trusted vassal.

In this way, a long space of seventeen years elapsed. During this period of time, Marco Polo traveled to various countries in the east and the west as a messenger of the emperor. During this long sojourn in China, however, Marco Polo had an ardent desire in his mind to visit Venezia, his long coveted native country.

However, none of the people in his country was in belief what Marco Polo stated regarding the state of things in the eastern countries as he used to call. As the result, Marco Polo was laughed at by saying that Marco Polo was a liar. It was for this reason that Marco Polo was imprisoned.

Other Information

  • The Grand Theater performance was the final performance for unassigned ken-1 Shima Karina.
  • Final performance for Sugata Mimi, Satsuki Keiko.
  • Although they didn't retire until July and September of 1970 and were listed as assigned to Snow Troupe in March of that year, the 100th anniversary book also claims this as the final performance of Koyanagi Mari and Nagisa Kaoru, who would have debuted with Silk Road as their hatsubutai performance.
