shan-shans (シャンシャン):

A general term used for the objects held by performers during a parade. When not a feather fan, the shan-shan most often looks like a small, round shield with ribbons attached. On the face of the "shield" is a design related to the theme of the performance — at times simply letters in glitter and at times an elaborate attachment that glows. On rare occasions, however, the shan-shans may be other items such as bells, electric candles, flower bouquets, etc.

The origin of "shan-shan" is unknown, but presumed to be an onomatopoeic word describing the motion of waving the objects.
