Learning Japanese

Hello everyone,

Does anyone have a suggestion for me as to good books/websites that I can learn Japanese from? I have tried Mango Languages, since it was free, but it does not seem to be as in-depth as I would like. I also own a Japanese-English/English-Japanese Dictionary and a Japanese Grammar book. Before I decide to spend more money on this, I thought I'd see if anyone could suggest the best curriculum.

Thank you very much!

You're welcome! I love helping prospective Japanese students :)

I'm not always logged in on takawiki but if you have more questions you can message me on my tumblr (kittychan-sings-enka.tumblr.com) and I can give you some links

Hello kittychan,

Thank you very much! I will look into Genki perhaps when the school year is already underway. And you're right, listening to songs / watching plays has helped a lot. :)

Thank you!

(I was a TA of a beginning Japanese class for a year)

Genki is always good, and since they are very commonly used in Japanese classrooms you'd be set if you ever decided to take an official class. They are also reasonably priced (although if you decide to purchase right now, the prices are higher due to the start of the school year). You can buy a book of exercises to go with it, although I don't think that has an answer key so you might have to find someone to help you with that.

There are also a lot of other resources you can surround book-learning with to make your Japanese studies more effective. If you are a Takarazuka fan you're hearing lots of Japanese songs which is very, very helpful :)

Flashcard apps for vocabulary are also good; it's hard to remember grammar if you're struggling with the vocabulary, so it helps to solidify that first. I use Anki, which has a computer version as well as mobile versions for at least Android and iOS.
