Act One

Baltimore, 1948. The cast and stagehands arrive at Ford's Theater to load in the new show (Another Op'nin,' Another Show). Fred Graham is producing, directing and starring as Petruchio in a new musical version of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, which also stars his ex-wife, Lilli Vanessi, as Katharine. Once happily but stormily married, Fred and Lilli now fight like cats and dogs. Lilli seethes when Fred flirts with other women, especially Lois Lane, the young nightclub star he cast as Bianca (her first "legitimate" role). However infatuated Fred is with Lois, he also cast her boyfriend in the show: Bill, a hoofer-turned-actor who is also a gambler.

Bill has just lost another big bet: he owes ten thousand dollars. Lois is dismayed (Why Can't You Behave)-especially when she learns that Bill signed the IOU in Fred's name.

Not surprisingly, Fred and Lilli celebrate the first anniversary of their divorce with a heated argument, during which Lilli takes a phone call from her wealthy new fiancé General Harrison Howell. Fred's jealousy propels him to continue their petty squabble, but soon the two stars are reminiscing about the Wunderbar days gone by, when they were struggling actors in love.

As the show begins, two gangsters show up to collect on Bill's IOU, which is in Fred's name. Fred knows nothing about it, but the gangsters - having heard that song and dance before - decide to stick around for the show to make sure Fred doesn't skip town.

Fred has ordered some flowers for Lois, but his dresser mistakenly delivers them to Lilli. She is deeply touched: the bouquet contains the same flowers she and Fred had at their wedding (So In Love). Fred is in a pickle-not only were the flowers meant for Lois, so was accompanying note. Before he can explain, Lilli has tucked the unread note safely next to her heart, in the bosom of her gown, and takes the stage for the scene where Petruchio meets Katharine.

The Taming of the Shrew, the musical, begins (We Open In Venice), with Lilli as Katharine, Fred as Petruchio, Lois as Bianca and Bill as Lucentio. Opening the show, Bianca selects Lucentio over her many suitors (Tom, Dick or Harry). To Lucentio's great relief, Petruchio enters, announcing "I've Come To Wive It Wealthily In Padua." Before Lucentio can marry Bianca, her elder sister must be wed. But this is not as easy as it sounds: the sister, beautiful and rich, is known as Katharine "the curst" (I Hate Men).

While offstage during the scene, finally Lilli reads the note meant for Lois. She is furious. Back on stage, Lilli's rage for Fred mirrors Katharine's for Petruchio, and she, as Katharine, hits, slaps and bites him for all she's worth. Fred, as Petrichio, tries to woo her (Were Thine That Special Face), but finally responds to Lilli's "ad libbing" by spanking her over his knee.

After the scene, Lilli immediately calls Harrison. She's had enough of the theater-and of Fred: she wants to leave the show and marry Harrison right away. Seeing Lilly ready to depart mid-show, Fred purposefully tells the gangsters that the debt was indeed his, but that if Lilli quits he'll have to close the show and they'll never get their money. The gangsters suggest to Lilli (at gunpoint) that she not leave, and the show continues with its cast intact (Cantiamo D'Amore). As Katharine, Lilli still tries to escape, but Fred, as Petruchio, ties her up with his whip (Kiss Me, Kate). The gangsters, now in costume, join the production to keep an eye on her.

Act Two

At intermission, the actors cool off in the alley (Too Darn Hot). Harrison arrives to rescue Lilli, but Fred quickly convinces him that all is well-that Lilli was just indulging in the "caprices of a woman of beauty and talent." To Bill's consternation, Lois recognizes the General-it seems he once romanced her too. Lois reassures Bill as best she can (Always True To You (In My Fashion.)). In Act II, Petruchio, no longer a bachelor, wonders "Where Is The Life That Late I Led?"

The next scene break is eventful. As Harrison and Lilli dream of their married life (From This Moment On) it becomes clear that the General will demand utmost subservience in a wife; regardless, they depart. Bill, meanwhile, writes a love letter to Lois (Bianca). The gunmen call their "boss," only to find that the debt has been cancelled because their boss, too, has been "cancelled." With Lilli gone, Fred sadly realizes that she is his one true love (So In Love, Reprise). The gangsters, as they leave, offer Fred some advice on romance (Brush Up Your Shakespeare). The final scene begins (Pavane) and-to everyone's surprise-who should enter but Katharine (I Am Ashamed That Women Are So Simple). Katharine and Petruchio (and Fred and Lilli) declare they are meant for each other, and the company rejoices (Kiss Me, Kate, Finale).
