Season of Angels
The month of June is called "the season of angels" in Cannellonia. Its tradition says that many angels come down and play Cupid in this lovely season of tender sentiment.
One day in June of the year 2002, in the palace of a small European kingdom Cannellonia, a pompous banquet is about to start in celebration of the king's ninetieth birthday. Gustave and his friends Albertin and Georges are trying to enter the palace by mixing with the guests from various countries invited to the banquet. Gustave is still an unpopular artist who fell in love with the king's great grand-daughter Margherita while she was studying in Paris. Some time ago, he learned that her engagement to Prince Assala of a Caribbean kingdom would be announced at the banquet. He thus has come with his friends to Cannellonia in order to prevent her one way or the other from getting engaged to the prince. However, Gustave is quite timid although he enjoys a reputation as a very good-looking guy in Paris. He looks anxious lest he should be discovered. Albertin and Georges put spurs to Gustave saying that he should prevent her from getting engaged to the prince by all means if he really loves her.
The palace is very closely watched under the instructions of the Grand Chamberlain Macaroni and his assistants Aldente and Novitende so the banquet may proceed without incidents. Nevertheless, Gustave enters the palace with desperate courage and succeeds in seeing Margherita. She claims that she had no knowledge at all of the engagement until she returned home, and tells him of her determination not give him away in defiance of eventual strong opposition. Although Margherita's mother Lasagna tries to make the king understand her daughter's determination, he stubbornly refuses to listen to her on the grounds that he does not want his beloved great grand-daughter to marry a poor artist.
Gustave is utterly discouraged by the king's severe denunciation of him which he has heard in secret. Albertin proposes to the disheartened Gustave to play a trick on the king and Prince Assala with the purpose of stopping the announcement of the engagement. Gustave is afraid of the consequence of their rebellion against the king. However, Margherita is successful in convincing him that he should play the trick in order to save her from marrying the prince whom she doesn't love. Now he is determined in playing a big game.
Prince Assala at last arrives at the palace. Gustave approaches the prince pretending to be the prince's acquaintance. Albertin pretending to be the prince's younger brother sings the praises of Peperonti, a physician-in-ordinary to the king, as the best doctor in the world and asks him to diagnose Assala who Albertin says is very apt to be forgetful. Yielding to flattery, Peperonti vows without fault to hospitalize Assala as a scrious case.
Then, while Georges disguised as an Arabian approaches the king and tells him that Assala wants to marry Margherita for money, Albertin now disguised as an Indian comes up to Assala and tells him that Margherita will marry him for money. Furthermore, when Margherita is falsely making a show of affection toward Assala in order to be hated by him, Albertin and Georges now in gaudy female disguise each come in shouting that "she" is Assala's true wife.
Totally confused, Assala runs away, and the others run after him. Assala decides to return to his country. Lasagna comes up and tells him the way to flee Cannellonia.

On a back street in New York, a young girl named Abel seriously practices the saxophone. A man all in black named Shadow hurriedly runs away. A man called Ash bearing shadows of bygones comes out in pursuit of Shadow.

In a bar in a back street, Ash salves his conscience by drinking. Lily, a blind flower seller, comes in and bumps against Ash. Ash takes her hand and tenderly invites her to dance. They enjoy the peaceful time however short it may be. Just when a warm sentiment is created between the two, Shadow snipes at him.

As Guest of the bar sings a requiem for Ash, the scene changes into a snow-covered plain. When people of the white land violently dance, Ash who has been reborn as a god reappears. A chorus praising the lives of all reaches a climax.
