Ciboulette, a young village girl, has come into the city to sell her vegetables and is a huge hit. However, she is preoccupied and unhappy because she has turned 21 and must marry one of her 8 suitors, none of whom appeal to her.

She decides to go see Madame Pingret, a fishmonger and fortuneteller, who tells her that she will find her man under a cabbage and win him away from another woman.

Ciboulette later gets into a dispute with Gaspard, when the controller Duparquet and his younger friend Antonin come to her rescue.

Antonin is heartbroken over being abandoned by his lover Zénobie, and a friendship grows between Antonin and Ciboulette....
