A Flute Named Wind

In January of the year 1592 when Hideyoshi Toyotomi is still in power, the sixth son is born to Ieyasu Tokugawa who is ambitious for the rulership. The newborn's mother is Lady Chaa, Ieyasu's concubine. At first glance at his baby, Ieyasu thinks him to be evil-looking, and treats him coldly as if he is a devil's child. He finally finishes off the child by sending him out of the castle. This sixth son is named Tatsuchiyo for his childhood is fostered by Sankuro Hanai. Tatsuchiyo grows up enjoying his boyhood with Mondonosho, Sankuro's son, without blaming his father for abandoning him as a devil's child. He undergoes his coming-of-age ceremony and changes his name to Tadateru. The times change and Tadateru's free and joyful days are put to an end.

Ieyasu wins the decisive battle at Sekigahara and brings the whole country under his rule. He calls back Tadateru who has become a young man and assumed the name Tadateru Kazusanosuke Matsudaira as he succeeded the Matsudairas of Nagasawa. Ieyasu is surprised at the outstandingly imposing personality of his sixth son whom he has so far kept away as a devil's child. Tadateru receives and listens to foreigners and ordinary people sincerely and without discrimination. Ieyasu finds Tadateru so diligent and competent that he regrets a little for having already turned over the office of shogun to Hidetada, his third son. Tadateru is engaged to Princess Iroha, the daughter of Masamune Date, a powerful lord who submitted to the Tokugawa family only after the battle of Sekigahara. Tadateru is aware of the princess' disinterested love toward him, and wants to protect her from being exploited by adults struggling for power. While he keeps her away in a villa for protection, she fears he is not fond of her. Mondonosho falls in love in the course of looking after her. However, he can only love her discreetly and one-sidedly because he has pledged along with his father their loyalty to Tadateru.

At last Tadateru is about to marry Princess Iroha at Ieyasu's command. Ieyasu gives him as a wedding gift the domain of Takada in Echigo. Masamune Date who is to become Tadateru's father-in-law complains of the gift and dare says that his son-in-law should be given Osaka Castle where Hideyori Toyotomi resides. The second shogun Hidetada has a reputation for timidity and mediocrity, and is in haste to completely destruct the Toyotomi family. As for Tadateru, he is winning popularity among the vassals and common people. Now that his daughter is about to marry the popular Tadateru, Masamune Date is driven by ambition all the more. In a tense atmosphere where Ieyasu and Masamune try to understand the unexpressed intentions of the other, Tadateru frankly declares that he won't fight against the Toyotomi family. As he has learned a lot from foreigners and his vision has now outgrown the small insular Japan, he thinks that wars likely to kill many innocent people are foolish and useless. He puts importance on enjoying the given life even though he may find himself isolated. On the night of the wedding, Tadateru goes to Osaka Castle to see Hideyori ignoring the intentions of the seniors and leaving behind Princess Iroha. Ieyasu is ready to accept Hideyori as his vassal, contrary to Hidetada who wants to destroy the Toyotomis.

However, Yodogimi, Hideyori's mother, stubbornly refuses the idea that her son would become a vassal of the Tokugawas. Hideyori is married to Princess Sen, Hidetada's daughter, that is, Tadateru's niece. Princess Sen regards Tadateru as her favorite elder brother since her childhood, and he in turn treats her with much affection. Maybe because Hideyori is only one year older than Tadateru, they are congenial spirits ever since they met and pledged their permanent friendship. Although Tadateru has come to Osaka Castle in person in order to convince Hideyori to make the right choice, he fails to do so because of Yodogimi's stubbornness in believing in the authority of the Toyotomis.

Hidetada bans Christianity with the view of containing the Christian lords, let alone Masamune Date's anxiety to expand his sphere of influence by taking advantage of his position as the father-in-law of Ieyasu's sixth son. He requires Mondonosho to prepare accommodations for the now homeless Christians in his domain of Takada in Echigo province. The missionary Luis Sotelo with whom Tadateru is friends with shows up and suggests that Tadateru and Princess Iroha go with him to his home country, Spain. As Tadateru wishes to see the wide world full of opportunities which he cannot know of from Japan, Sotelo's proposition seems to him unexpected and very attractive. He supposes that in remote Spain he can peacefully live with Princess Iroha whom he loves without risk of being involved in power struggles.
